Prompt 1:
https://goo.gl/images/7PDUhe
In this ad it completely excludes everyone except for females with a focus on Mothers and possibly daughters. The ad shows that being a women's most important role is not even Mother but a cleaner. It reinforces male dominated culture. It is a surface value ad so that if a man were to see it he might believe it to be a good Mother's Day gift for his mom or wife. If a woman sees it that she is subconsciously reinforced that she is the household cleaner. The ad comes from Mr. Clean showing a man in the foreground and the women( mother and daughter) in the background cleaning.

Prompt 2:
This ad is all about keeping the gender stereotypes. It uses Mother's Day and shows a woman and her daughter cleaning saying "get back to the job that really matters"  insinuating that other than reproducing the only other important job a woman can do is clean for a man. Without saying it the ad basically says that women belong in servitude to male figures. In turn, reinforcing the compulsory heterosexual culture that we live in that keeps the women below the man. The ad is Mr. Clean but the depiction they use of the character is a strong and all cleansing being. Thus the woman has to use Mr. Clean a male, to even succeed in cleaning. The placement of the people in the ad reinforces the masculine dominant culture that men have to be in front of women.

Prompt 3:
This ad has not changed anything that I can think of about my own identity or others. That is because of how sexist the ad is and I do not support a culture in which women/ females are seen as objects to serve the male figure. In our language the male over female dominance is perpetuated and in this ad it only perpetuates that further. Therefore, this cultural artifact doesn't have an impact on neither my gender expression nor my identity.

Prompts 4:
The cultural object is an ad from 2011 from Mr. Clean. the ad is for their cleaning sponge. The social world that it exists in is a capitalist American society in which males have a complete dominance over both socially and economically. No surprises here that it is a group of men that created this ad to keep the female down in the place, they believe, that she belongs. Which would be behind the man and doing chores. The receivers are the any American consumers, but the target audience would be those who are mothers, or fathers to buy a gift for their wife.

  1. Hey Ben! I was actually really surprised by this ad. I had never seen it before and I found it demeaning to women of all ages. I thought that what you said about how Mr. Clean was a strong and all cleansing being and that women have to use a “male” to succeed in such a task was interesting. I never really thought of it in that way but it makes complete sense that a male dominated corporation would once again say that women are not able to succeed in anything without the help of a man. This ad definitely keeps the gender stereotype alive, as do many of the Mr. Clean ads I feel. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Hi Ben,

Great post! When looking at this ad for the Mr. Clean product, it wasn't surprising that they used a woman in it. This ad specifically targeted mothers as it mentioned mother's day, insinuating that mothers should buy the product as they are expected to be the ones who do the cleaning and housework. Women are commonly targeted as the ones who must perform cleaning duties in the household. That's just how it has always been viewed by society. Society believes that women must be the house wife and clean all day while the man is at work and can come home to a spotless house. But who is to say that the woman can't be the one with the career while her husband stays home and cleans? I wish more ads would try to break away from this traditional concept and push for ads that represent equality between the man and woman.
