cultural object: Ariana Grande- God is a Woman

Prompt 1:
This music video is both hyper-sexualized and promotes the power of women. In general it relies
on a woman's sexuality. I chose this specifically because of how it so strongly uses sexuality as
a method of gaining attention, but the themes in the video all lead back to women in power as well
as inclusivity of different races.

Prompt 2:
Using the cultural diamond, the producer is a woman and the message to me personally gets
across as empowering. Further, the title God is a Woman makes you look for that empowerment from
the beginning. However, I could see someone not paying attention at all and just think about how
sensual Ariana Grande is. The object is a music video and the world it is placed in would be the
global music industry watched by people in America as well as many places globally.

The underlying values shown in this music video would be inclusivity of POC because
you can see throughout the video when Ariana Grande
isn't the only one in the video there are always people of all colors. She uses
hyper-sexualized scenes on her own especially when she is the liquid or when she is
on top of Earth playing with the clouds and she’s wearing the low cut clothing. I also noticed
that most of the scenes that have the group of women they are covered in a cloak or covered and
looking away, but at the end they are recreating the Michelangelo painting, but with all women and
they are in the nude. This could symbolize that the women are the gods and that men in power can
be replaced by women, and not only women but women of all colors.

  1. After watching the video I didn't think that deeply into it but once you mentioned it I know see how she could mean that all women are powerful like gods. I think that most people don't look into the underlying message that shows women who are sexual can also be powerful, honestly if i were have watched this a while ago I would have just thought she looked really good and the whole video was very sexual, I mean she has light shining in between two legs but now I see that as empowerment and how women are in power.

  2. After the watching the video, I realized there was a lot of symbolism and inclusion of gender and race as you mentioned. In one of the scenes I also noted how men where surrounding Ariana and worshiping her, similar to the concept of women being used to glorify men in music videos. As you mentioned, the video is sexualized in order to fit into the videos of this generation. In fact, the lyrics of the music video talk about sex; for example "Baby, lay me down and let's pray/ I'm tellin' you the way I like it, how I want it."

  3. I like that you chose this song/music video because it can very easily be mistaken as an obstruction of feminism using hyper-sexualized illustrations. I also like how you mention the inclusion of people of color; Ariana wanted to hit multiple social agendas. The video itself can be abrasive from a surface level perspective but, it's done that way in order to kind of sift out ignorant people. It's obvious that the imagery coupled with the lyrics imply a deeper and more powerful interpretation. I think you pointed that out really well.
